How do I stop overwriting in Word?

This happens in older versions because you have (usually accidentally) hit the Insert key.

Use *Tools menu > Word Options > Advanced

On that panel uncheck the Use Insert key to control overtype mode

In Word2007 this is off by default but may be on in older versions

Frequently asked questions I can answer. I used to have piles of notes about all sorts of ICT things that I needed for classes but nowadays there doesn't seem to be much of that sort of training so most of the time I'm answering individual questions about how to do this or that. Often I'll reply in an e-mail or scribble something down or just go and show people on the job and it occurred to me that all that one-off effort could be put to better use if I could at least make a list of the ones I remembered, and so here we go.
